Lips
We use our lips to make the sounds “P,” “B,” “M,” “W” as in “pet, bet, met, wet.”
Teeth
We use our teeth to make the sounds “S” and “Z” as in “sip, zip.” Together, we use our teeth and bottom lip to make the sounds “F” and “V” as in “fine, vine.”
Tongue-Tip
We use our tongue-tip to make the sounds “T,” “D,” “L,” “S,” “Z,” “Ch,” “Sh,” and “J” as in “tip, dip, lip, sip, zip, chip, ship and jip.” Our tongue tip also helps us make the “ZH” and “ch” sounds as in “treasure chest.”
Tongue-Back
We use the back of our tongue to make the sounds “K,” “G” and “R” as in “king, go, ring.”
Ridge
We use the ridge that’s right behind our top front teeth to make the sounds “T,” “D,” “L,” and “N” as in “tip, dip, line, nine.”
Roof-Front
We use the front part of the roof of our mouth to make the sounds “SH,” “J,” “CH,” and “ZH” as in “She just chose treasure.”
Roof-Back
We use the back of our mouth’s roof to make the sounds “R,” “G,” “K” as in “ring, go, king.”
Nose
Air flows through our nose to make the sounds “M,” “N,” and “NG” as in “my, nice, song.”
Voice-Box
Inside our voice-box are our vocal-cords that vibrate when we make all vowels as in “ah, ee, oh,” and they vibrate when we make some of our sounds like “B,” “D,” “G” as in “big, dig, gig.”
Lungs
Our lungs give us air to make all of our sounds. Check out the “H” sound because it’s all air as in “have, hard, head.”
EyesOur eyes let us see how we make our sounds in a mirror. People who have a hearing problem can see how well they make their sounds on games like Video Voice.
Ears Our ears let us hear how well we say our sounds.
